3 and 4 Year Old Solo Violinists Perform to Help Children

Houston, TX (Vocus) -- On May 26, 2010 The Health Museum will be the host for a gala to introduce Benny Bear, to the world. And Benny Bear will in turn introduce his new children’s book, Benny Bear Visits the Hospital, which will benefit over 25,000 indigent children this next year in the Harris County Hospital District.

Entertainment for the evening will be by children from 3 to 18 who are with Texas Young Virtuosos String Ensemble from the Durfee Music School of Texas in Southwest Houston. “My students really wanted to help with awareness for this project because they are learning, even at the age of 3, that ‘giving back’ is what community is all about,” said Joyce Durfee-Gertsman the school’s founder and director.

Literacy statistics show that when a hospital or doctor gives a young child a book it has a profound effect on that child’s love of reading. And a love of reading will take that child far with their education. Because of these stats The BOOKS Program at Ben Taub was created.

“In Harris County, roughly 50% of children graduate from high school. Those statistics just aren’t acceptable,” said Susan Mullins Brisbane. “These numbers are deplorable, and something needs to be done to help foster the love of reading in our children.”

Ms. Brisbane’s love of children lead her to found Gifts with Heart (http://www.giftswithheart.org) a charity that picks one project a year to work on for a worthy cause. This year it just happens to be children’s literacy, so she set about creating a children’s book that would make a hospital stay for a child a little less frightening.

The gala will be held Wednesday, May 26 from 6:30-8:30pm at The Health Museum at 1515 Hermann Drive, Houston, TX 77004. Tickets are $75 per person. If you would like more information, please visit the website. http://www.giftswithheart.org
